I earn a commission when you buy through my links. It never changes what I recommend. How that works

How I pick products

Every product on this site goes through the same checks. I'm upfront about one thing first: I don't have every set on my own table. My recommendations come from specs, measurements, maker reputation and a lot of owner feedback, read carefully. Where something is my opinion, I say so.

The numbers I check first

  • King height against square size. A king that's too tall for its square looks cramped and gets knocked over. US Chess guidance puts tournament kings at roughly 3.375 to 4.5 inches on 2 to 2.5 inch squares, with the king's base around 75 to 80 percent of a square.
  • Weight. Weighted pieces stand up to quick play and feel better in the hand. If a listing doesn't say "weighted" or give a weight, I assume it isn't.
  • Materials, stated plainly. "Wood finish" is not wood. "Ebonized" means dyed, not ebony. I note the difference.
  • What's in the box. Extra queens, storage, felt pads, a board that actually matches the pieces.

What owners say, not just star ratings

A 4.6-star average hides a lot. I look for repeated complaints: chipped finials, warped boards, magnets too weak to matter, pieces that arrive a different color than the photos. If the same problem shows up again and again, it goes in the review.

How lists are ordered

Rank reflects what I'd tell a friend to buy for that specific need, not commission rates. Prices and availability change, so every product links to its current Amazon listing. Product details on this site refresh daily.
