The 4 Best African Chess Sets in 2026, Ranked by the Spec Sheet

Pharaohs, engraved brass, painted resin. Four African chess sets checked spec by spec, with the numbers sellers leave out.

The GiftHome Egypt Pharaoh set is my top pick for African chess sets in 2026. It's the only one of these four with a solid wood board, a king height the seller actually states, and drawers built into the base. Thirty-two metal figures, 3.5-inch king, 15-inch board.

I haven't unboxed any of these. I read each listing line by line, ran the square-size math myself, and went through what buyers report. And here's the honest shape of this category: of the four sets here, three are Egyptian themed and the fourth is brass with "Tribal" in the title and no tribal motif anywhere in the description. If you want hand-carved sub-Saharan wood, that's a different hunt entirely.

How I picked these

I set thresholds first, then checked which listings cleared them. Most didn't.

King height had to be typed out in the listing. US Chess puts a tournament king at roughly 3.375 to 4.5 inches, and a seller who won't commit to a number is usually hiding a small piece. Square size had to make sense against the king base, which should run about 75 to 80 percent of a square. On these themed sets you're usually looking at 1.3 to 1.6-inch squares, so a fat 3.5-inch king will crowd its neighbors.

Weight per piece counted as much as total weight. A metal king under about 45 grams feels hollow in the hand, and the GiftHome king is listed at 54 grams, which is already on the light side for metal.

Material had to be named. "Wood" with no species means particleboard under a veneer. Solid brass, solid resin, solid wood, those I can work with. If you want the hardwood end of the market, my guide to best wooden chess sets covers the ones that name an actual species.

And I weighted return friction. A 30-day window with free returns is the difference between a gamble and a purchase, especially on a folding board with a hinge down the middle.

The listing gives real numbers, which is rarer than it should be. The board is 15 x 15 x 2.55 inches of solid wood with a 10.6-inch playing area, and the pieces stow in drawers built into the base. Thirty-two cast metal pharaoh figures, made in Turkey, with the king at about 3.5 inches and 1.9 ounces (54 grams). A carrier bag comes with it.

Two things bother me. The listing claims 1.4-inch squares, but 10.6 inches divided by 8 works out to about 1.33, so somebody measured loosely. Either way, 1.3 to 1.4-inch squares under a 3.5-inch metal king is tight, and you'll be knocking elbows in the middlegame. Also note the pearl work is motif, not real mother-of-pearl; the seller says so plainly, which I respect. Buy it for the wood board and the drawers, both of which are genuinely unusual at this end of the market.

What owners say: Review counts on these import sets are thin and star averages don't tell you much, so I lean on the spec sheet. The pattern with Turkish metal sets is drawer fit and transit damage: pieces travel inside the board, and a hard knock can bend a staff or a spear. Count all 32 pieces against the foam before you break down the box.

Good for: a first "grown-up" set you want to leave out on a table. Skip it if: you plan to play rated games on it; those squares are too small.

This is the one that folds. A 15-inch board that hinges in half, gold clasps, storage inside, weighted metal Egyptian figures in gold and bronze tones. The surface is a marble-style veneer over a wood core, which means applied, not cut stone, however the photos read.

Here's my problem with it: the listing runs five long paragraphs of adjectives and never states a king height, a piece weight, or a square size. On a 15-inch board with any border at all, you're under 1.6-inch squares by my arithmetic, and that's small. It's also the least useful listing of the four for a buyer who cares about numbers. If what you want is stone rather than a veneer that photographs like stone, the best marble chess sets are real cut material and priced like it.

What owners say: Folding boards live and die on the hinge, and that's the first thing buyers mention with this style: whether the two halves sit flat when it's opened. Ask that question before you order, and check the clasp tension on both sides when it lands. Count the pieces the day it arrives.

Good for: a set that travels in a suitcase or lives in a small apartment. Skip it if: you want the seller to tell you what you're buying before you buy it.

Solid brass, individually molded and polished, black and silver finish, engraved all over, decorative border on the board, and a black carry case with metal clasps and a handle. The title says "Tribal" and the description never mentions a tribal motif, so treat that word as marketing. No board size, no king height, no piece weight, no piece count in the listing. That's alot of blanks.

Brass is both the draw and the drawback. It's heavy, it won't chip like resin, and it will tarnish, so you're buying a polishing habit along with a chess set. Without a stated king height I can't tell you whether this plays like a 3-inch set or a 4-inch set, and that changes who it suits. If it's headed for a desk as an object, the missing numbers matter less. If a club player is going to use it, they matter alot. There are better gifts for that crowd in my roundup of the best chess sets for men.

What owners say: Brass sets draw the same two comments every time, and they're both about feel: the weight is lovely in the hand, and the finish dulls within a year or two of regular handling. A 32-piece brass set on a folding board is a display object first and a playing set second.

Good for: a gift for someone who keeps one nice thing on a desk. Skip it if: you want to know the king height before you spend the money.

The most modest of the four, and I mean that about the material: it's cast resin, hand painted, with felt on the bottoms. King is 3 1/4 inches, the board is 16 inches with hieroglyphic decoration, 32 pieces, and it ships in a decorative box with foam cutouts. Anubis in black, silver and gold.

3 1/4 inches sits a hair under the 3.375-inch floor US Chess sets for a king, and resin is plastic no matter how well it's painted. The listing also skips the square size and the playing area for that 16-inch board, so you're guessing at the grid. But felt bottoms and a foam-lined box are exactly what you want if the set is going to live on a kid's shelf and get knocked onto the carpet twice a week.

What owners say: Hand-painted resin is the one material where photos flatter the product most. What comes back from buyers is paint rub on the tall pieces and a gap between the gold in the picture and the gold in the room. Check the returns window before you commit, and go over all 32 pieces for chipped paint on arrival.

Good for: a young player, or a shelf that needs a theme more than a tournament set. Skip it if: you want real wood or real metal in your hands.

What actually matters when you buy African chess sets

King height against square size

US Chess guidance is a king of about 3.375 to 4.5 inches on squares of 2 to 2.5 inches, with the king base at 75 to 80 percent of the square. Almost nothing in this themed category clears that. You're looking at 3 to 3.5-inch kings on 1.3 to 1.6-inch squares, which is fine for a shelf and tight for a game.

Weight per piece, not total weight

A 3 lb box tells you nothing. Ask what the king weighs. Under about 45 grams, a metal king rattles when you set it down, and the feel of the set collapses. The GiftHome king at 54 grams is the only figure I can quote here, and it's on the light side.

Material words that mean something

Solid brass, solid resin, solid wood, veneer, motif. "Mother-of-pearl motif" means no pearl. "Marble-style veneer" means no marble. If you want the top of this market, my guide to best luxury chess sets is where the real stone, real brass and real hardwood live.

Storage, hinges and shipping

Chess pieces in transit is how most sets get damaged. Foam cutouts beat a drawstring bag. Drawers beat a folding hinge. And if you buy a folder, budget for the 30-day return window to be your safety net, because a hinge that doesn't sit flat is not fixable at home.

Which one I'd buy

If you're buying one set to play on and leave out, get the GiftHome Pharaoh. Solid wood, drawers, a 3.5-inch king, and the only listing here that answers a straight question with a number. If the set is going in a suitcase, take the Agirlgle folder and accept the missing specs as the price of portability. If it's a gift for someone with a desk and no chess clock, buy the brass. And if a kid is involved, the painted resin Anubis is the one you won't mourn when a pawn goes missing.

Questions people ask me

Are Egyptian chess sets actually African?

Egypt is in Africa, so yes, geographically and culturally. What you won't find much of on Amazon is sub-Saharan carving, the hand-carved ebony and olivewood sets sold in tourist markets. Most of what gets listed as African is North African themed: pharaohs, Anubis, hieroglyphs.

What king height should a themed chess set have?

US Chess guidance puts a tournament king at roughly 3.375 to 4.5 inches, sitting on squares of 2 to 2.5 inches. Decorative sets usually run smaller, 3 to 3.5-inch kings on 1.3 to 1.6-inch squares. That works on a shelf and gets cramped over the board.

Is metal or resin better for an African-themed set?

Metal feels better in the hand and survives drops, but a king under about 45 grams feels hollow, and brass needs polishing. Resin is cheaper, takes paint well, and chips instead of bending. Metal for play, resin for a kid's room.
