9 Best Unique Chess Sets for 2026, Ranked by How They Actually Play

Nine themed sets held against real chess standards: king height, square size, felt, and whether you'd actually finish a game on them.

The best unique chess set I'd buy with my own money is the XAOHAO metal and acrylic set on the 17 inch folding board. It has a 3.5 inch king, felted bottoms, and two extra queens for promotion, which most novelty sets don't bother with. That's a set built by somebody who has played.

Nine sets below, ranked from "I'd play this every week" down to "I'd dust this monthly." Some are real chess sets wearing a costume. Others are sculptures with a board painted underneath, and I'll tell you which is which.

How I picked these

I ran every set against the same four questions, and most failed at least one.

First, does the king make sense? US Chess guidance puts a king at roughly 3.375 to 4.5 inches tall, with a base about 75 to 80 percent of a square's width. Do that math on a 17 inch board and you want squares near 1.75 inches and a king base in the 1.3 to 1.4 inch range. Plenty of themed sets never publish a king height. That silence tells you something.

Second, square size. Tournament play wants 2 to 2.5 inch squares. A themed set with 1.5 inch squares has you stacking pieces on the back rank like dishes in a sink.

Third, felt and weight. Felt bottoms are non-negotiable for me, so is a number on the weight. If a listing won't say how heavy a piece is, I assume hollow.

Fourth, return friction. Licensed sets often ship from third-party sellers, so I read the shipping and return terms before the product description. A set you can't send back is a set you're stuck with.

Noble Collection's take on Middle-earth: 32 sculpted pieces split good and evil, Galadriel, Aragorn, Frodo and Gandalf on one side, Gollum, the Nazgûl, Saruman and Sauron on the other, on an 18.5 x 18.5 inch board. Pieces run 2 to 4 inches, which is a huge spread. I've compared the wider range in my guide to the best Lord of the Rings chess sets.

That spread is the tell. A 4 inch Sauron beside a 2 inch hobbit means you're buying a diorama with a playable base, not the reverse. The 18.5 inch board helps, but with no square size published I'd assume the tall pieces crowd.

The concession: this is the set you buy when the shelf comes first. It photographs well, it starts conversations, and it will hide a pawn behind a wizard every single game.

What owners say: Resin sculpts at this scale feel heavy in the hand and stay brittle at thin points, so swords and staffs are where damage shows up first. Buyers mention the paint detail and the packaging, and the smart ones keep the foam insert.

Good for: a Tolkien shelf that gets a game twice a year. Skip it if: you want to play anything resembling tournament chess on it.

USAOPOLY holds the Nintendo license and it shows in the casting: Link, Zelda, Impa, Epona, Darunia and Navi on one side, Ganondorf and Twinrova leading the other, 32 sculpted pieces total. Ages 8 and up, 60-plus minutes a game. For a Zelda house this is the set that stays out on the table.

What's missing is everything I care about. No king height, no square size, no piece weight. Character sets live or die on whether the pawns sit visibly lower than the knights at a glance, and I can't confirm that from the listing.

The concession: licensed figurine sets are display objects first. Different silhouettes mean diffrent footprints, and a wide-stance piece doesn't slide through a crowded board the way a plain pawn does. Your first game is really a naming exercise.

What owners say: The pattern with officially licensed USAOPOLY sets holds here. People praise the sculpts and the board art, then mention the pieces are lighter than expected. Buy it for the shelf and the occasional evening.

Good for: a Zelda fan who wants a gift that lands. Skip it if: you're teaching a beginner who needs identical silhouettes.

Super Mario Chess Set
Best Nintendo nostalgia

3. Super Mario Chess Set

Thirty-two hand-painted figurines in a collector's tin. That's the pitch and it's a good one: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser and the rest, each in a pose you'd recognize across the room. The tin is the storage, which beats a cardboard box you'll flatten and lose. I went deeper on it in my Super Mario Chess Collector's Edition review.

Here's my problem. The listing never states board size or material. No dimensions at all. With hand-painted pieces that's the whole ballgame, because paint rubs at contact points and an undersized board turns the back rank into a traffic jam.

The concession is paint. Hand-painting 32 pieces at figurine scale means edges that wear, and weekly handling shows it first at the base and the hands.

What owners say: People talk about the tin and the paint more than the chess. The recurring note is that guests pick a favorite character before they learn how a knight moves, which is honestly the best argument for owning it.

Good for: a Nintendo household where the board is also decor. Skip it if: you want a board you can leave set up and play on weekly.

This is the best-documented set on the list and the one I'd trust to play. King is 3 3/8 inches with a 1 1/4 inch base. Board is 17 3/8 inches with 1 5/8 inch squares. Thirty-two hand-painted resin pieces with felt bottoms. Run the numbers: 1.25 divided by 1.625 is 77 percent, right inside the 75 to 80 percent band. Somebody at HPL did the math.

The pieces ship in a separate decorative box with foam storage, which is more than most sets at this level bother with.

The concession: 1 5/8 inch squares sit below the 2 to 2.5 inch range you'd want for tournament practice, and resin is light. It's a home set. A well-proportioned one, but you'll feel the difference if you're used to weighted boxwood.

What owners say: Felt bottoms and the foam storage get mentioned. The other recurring note with painted resin is thin protrusions, the trident tips and lightning bolts. Check those on arrival, before you've signed off on it.

Good for: a mythology fan who genuinely plays. Skip it if: you need tournament-size squares.

Zinc alloy pieces on a tempered glass board, with a polyresin base modeled on Renaissance architecture. Thirty-two metal pieces, which is rare down here, where "metal" usually means plated plastic over a core. If castles-in-miniature is your thing, the best medieval chess sets run in the same direction.

No dimensions anywhere. Not king height, not square size, not piece weight. On glass that matters twice, because glass shows every fingerprint and a metal piece with a small base rings like a coin.

The concession: it's furniture. Tempered glass on a sculpted resin base doesn't fold into a closet, and every recess in that base collects dust. Great if you have a spot that needs filling. Miserable in a cramped apartment.

What owners say: Glass boards get the same comments everywhere: smudges, clack, and the need for a cloth nearby. Zinc alloy holds up better than plating, so most long-term grumbling is about cleaning rather than wear.

Good for: a room that needs a centerpiece. Skip it if: you want a quiet board you can pack away.

The Noble Collection Jurassic Park Chess Set
Best for kids

6. The Noble Collection Jurassic Park Chess Set

by The Noble Collection
  • For dinosaur fans ages 7+
  • Officially licensed by Universal Studios
Check price on Amazon

Officially licensed by Universal, 32 dinosaur pieces (T. rex, Dilophosaurus, Velociraptor and friends), an 18.5 inch board with stone and grass textures, Jurassic Park logos and a fossil border. Ages 7 and up. If there's a seven-year-old in your life who thinks chess is boring, this is the argument.

The board is generously sized for the pieces, but textured surfaces cut both ways. Stone and grass art under the pieces means the print has to stay legible through a whole game, and busy art reads worse than a plain two-tone grid.

The concession: dinosaur sculpts have tails and legs. Anything with a tail is a piece that tips, and pieces that tip get dropped, and dropped pieces lose paint.

What owners say: Parents report the character names do the recruiting work, and kids learn which piece is which faster than they would with plain Staunton shapes. Adults tend to flag the board art as the weak point.

Good for: kids 7 and up who need a reason to care. Skip it if: you want a clean, readable playing surface.

A 15 inch folding wooden board with a fixed compartment molded to each piece, plus 32 zinc alloy figurines in a copper and bronze finish. That individual molding is the feature I'd actualy pay for. Pieces that each sit in their own cutout survive a backpack, and a folding board with clasps is a genuinely portable thing.

No king height, no square size, no weight. On a 15 inch board with figurine pieces I'd expect squares under 1.75 inches, which is fine for a travel set and tight for a long game.

The concession: heavy metal pieces in a folding wooden board means the board takes the abuse instead of the pieces. Hinges loosen, clasps scratch, and the playing surface picks up marks from the piece bases.

What owners say: Reviews of molded-compartment sets mention exactly what you'd hope, which is that nothing rattles. Complaints tend to land on clasp tension and a board that doesn't sit perfectly flat after a few trips.

Good for: club night in a backpack or a weekend away. Skip it if: you want big pieces and a wide board.

8. Large Egyptian Metal Chess Set for Adults

A 15 inch folding board with a marble-style veneer, gold clasps, and 32 weighted metal pieces in gold and bronze with Egyptian motifs. Gift-ready packaging. As a present for someone who likes objects, it does the job without you needing to know their rating.

The veneer is where I'd look closely. Marble-style finish on a folding board is a printed or laminated surface over a core, and the hinge is the first place it lifts. Nothing in the listing gives king height or square size either.

The concession: decorative metal sets with gold-tone finishes are display pieces. Plating wears at the high points of a sculpt over years of handling, and polishing doesn't put it back. Buy it as a gift or an object, not as a workhorse.

What owners say: Gift buyers mention the presentation. The recurring note on folding decorative boards is the hinge and the clasps, and whether the two halves meet flat. Check it before you wrap it.

Good for: a gift for someone who collects interesting objects. Skip it if: you want a set that survives weekly club use.

What actually matters when you buy a unique chess set

King height against square width. The ratio, not the number, decides whether a set plays. Aim for a king base at 75 to 80 percent of a square. A 1.25 inch base wants 1.6 to 1.7 inch squares. Get that wrong and every piece looks like it's standing on a dinner plate.

Square size. Two to 2.5 inches is the tournament range. Most themed sets land between 1.5 and 1.75 inches, and plenty won't tell you which. Below 1.5 inches, a 32-piece game turns into a sliding puzzle.

Felt and weight. Felt bottoms stop the scrape and protect the board. Weight is the other half: a metal or resin piece with heft sits still when you nudge the table. If no weight is published, assume hollow and price your expectations accordingly.

Readable silhouettes. Sculpted characters need to be identifiable from arm's length, in one glance, at the far rank. If two pieces share a shape and a height, you'll be squinting all game. I get into the molded-plastic side of this in my LEGO chess set review.

Shipping and returns. Thirty-two resin pieces in a foam insert, in a cardboard box, on a truck. Open it the day it lands and check the thin parts first. Third-party sellers can make returns annoying, so check those terms before you fall in love with a photo.

Which one I'd buy

If you play chess, buy the XAOHAO. A 3.5 inch king, felted bases, storage in the fold, and extra queens is the checklist I'd hand a manufacturer, and it happens to look like something you'd leave out.

If you're buying for a specific fan, match the license and stop overthinking it. Zelda for a Zelda house, Mario for a Nintendo shelf, Jurassic Park for a seven-year-old who needs a reason to sit still. And if you want to see the wider field before you commit, my best themed chess sets list covers the rest of the licensed universe.

Questions people ask me

Are themed chess sets actually playable?

Some are. The test is king height against square width. A 3 3/8 inch king on 1 5/8 inch squares plays fine, because the base comes out around 77 percent of the square. A 4 inch sculpt on the same board does not. Most licensed sets are display-first, and the honest ones admit it.

What numbers should I check before buying a unique chess set?

Three: king height, square size, and piece weight. US Chess guidance puts a king at roughly 3.375 to 4.5 inches with a base around 75 to 80 percent of a square. If a listing publishes none of the three, that silence is the answer.

Do metal chess pieces scratch a glass board?

They can, and they're loud on it. Felted bottoms help a lot, and lifting rather than sliding is the habit. Glass also shows fingerprints and every smudge, so a set like that needs a cloth nearby more than it needs a strategy book.
