The best fantasy chess set in this lineup is the Greek Mythology Olympus Gods set. Nine words of spec explain why: 3 3/8 inch king, 1 1/4 inch base, 1 5/8 inch squares, felt under every piece. That's a chess set that happens to be themed, not a statue that happens to have 32 parts.
I went through seven themed sets for 2026. Only two of the seven listings even say what the pieces are made of, and both say resin. That tells you where this market sits. Sculpt first, chess second.
How I picked these
I scored every set on four things, and only two cleared all four. King height of 3 inches or better, because a short king vanishes in a busy room. A king base landing between 75 and 80 percent of the square, which is the old ratio that keeps pieces from elbowing each other. A stated material or a stated weight, since a listing that hides both is usually hiding something else. And felt, because painted resin on bare resin scratches.
Storage counted too. A 32-piece count is the bare minimum. A foam cutout box or a pair of dust bags means somebody thought past the photo shoot. Return friction runs off the same logic: the more a listing pins down (weights, board dimensions, piece heights), the easier your case is if the thing arrives wrong.
Fair warning before we start. None of these is a tournament set. US Chess wants squares between 2 and 2.5 inches, and the only set here that even publishes a square size gives you 1 5/8 inches. If you want a serious playing board, buy a plain wooden one and put a fantasy set on the shelf next to it. If you want a themed set you can knock around on a Tuesday night, keep reading. There's a wider world of this stuff in my guide to themed chess sets if none of these seven land.

1. Greek Mythology Olympus Gods Zeus vs Poseidon Pewter and Bronze Color…
- 3 3/8 inch King with 1 1/4 inch base. Standard 32 pc set of men.
- 17 3/8 inch Poly resin Board with 1 5/8 inch Squares.
- Solid Resin and Hand Painted With Felt Bottoms
- Men Come In Separate Decorative Box With Foam Storage
This is the one I'd actually play on. The listing gives a 3 3/8 inch king, a 1 1/4 inch base, a 17 3/8 inch board and 1 5/8 inch squares, and that base-to-square math comes out near 77 percent, right in the pocket. Solid resin, hand painted, felt on the bottom of every man, and the pieces ship in a decorative box with foam cutouts.
Here's the concession, and it's a real one. Those squares are small. At 1 5/8 inches you're under the 2 inch tournament floor, and once you've got 32 hand-painted resin figures crowded onto a 17 inch board, the middlegame gets physical. Coffee table and casual games, fine. Thirty moves of a club game, no.
What owners say: These listings don't publish rating counts, so I'm working off the spec sheet and the pattern hand-painted resin sets always draw. Chipped paint at the high points. The occasional king with a wobble in the base. The foam box is your main defense against both, so don't throw it out.
Good for: mythology fans who want a set that plays as well as it looks Skip it if: you need tournament-legal square sizes or a set a kid can drop

2. Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth Chess Set
- Includes 32 finely sculpted pieces and full graphic chess board.
- Chess pieces measure 2 to 4 inches. Playing board is 18.5 x 18.5 inches.
- The epic battle of good and evil plays out with this intricately detailed chess set.
This is the set people picture when they hear fantasy chess. The Noble Collection gives you 32 sculpted pieces running 2 to 4 inches tall and an 18.5 inch square board covered in full graphic art. Galadriel, Aragorn, Frodo and Gandalf on one side; Sauron, Saruman, the Nazgûl and Gollum on the other. It's the biggest board in this lineup, tied with the Potter set at 18.5 inches.
And here's what bugs me. No king height. No square size. "Pieces measure 2 to 4 inches" is the kind of spec that sounds precise and tells you nothing, because the king might be the 4 inch figure or the whole range might be generous rounding. I can't tell you how big the squares are, and neither can the listing.
What owners say: Noble Collection licensed sets get two consistent reactions. The sculpt work is praised, and the packaging gets flagged as the weak link (molded plastic and cardboard, not foam). Paint rub on the tallest pieces is the complaint that repeats. If you go this route, keep the inner tray and pack it the way it came.
Good for: a display piece that gets played a few times a year Skip it if: you won't buy a set without published dimensions

3. USAOPOLY Game of Thrones Collector's Chess Set
- Includes 32 Custom Movers, 1 Game Board, 1 Chess Mover Reference Sheet, Removable Slip Sheet, Rules
- 2 Players
- Ages 18+
- 60 Min Play Time
USAOPOLY's Game of Thrones set is the most complete package in this list on paper: 32 custom movers, a game board, a mover reference sheet, a removable slip sheet and the rules. Ages 18+, 60 minutes of play time. The character mapping is dead on. Jon Snow as king, Daenerys as queen, Drogon and Rhaegal as rooks, the Unsullied as pawns on one side; the Night King, Viserion, giants as rooks and wights as pawns on the other.
Two things give me pause. Wights as pawns means eight near-identical figures, which looks fantastic and slows you down when you're counting a pawn chain in a blitz game. And the listing never states a material. Not once. On a set that's clearly aimed at adults, that's an omission.
What owners say: USAOPOLY's licensed collector sets draw the same feedback loop: sculpts hold up, box does the job, and players gripe about telling two similar pieces apart across the board. The inclusion of a reference sheet is the manufacturer quietly admitting the problem exists. It's still a good call.
Good for: adult fans who'll actualy move the pieces Skip it if: you want to know the material before you commit

4. The Noble Collection Harry Potter Wizard Chess Set
- Chess pieces measure 2 to 4 inches.
- For Harry Potter fans ages 7+
- Officially authorized by Warner Bros.
- Set includes two Harry Potter dust bags to safely store game pieces
The Potter set leans on presentation and mostly gets away with it. An 18.5 inch board with marble and stone textures and metallic logos around the border, 32 pieces from 2 to 4 inches, and two Harry Potter dust bags for storage. Ages 7 and up. Those dust bags are the detail I keep coming back to, because it's a cheap thing to include and almost nobody bothers.
The catch: "marble and stone" describe textures, not materials, and again you get a 2 to 4 inch range with no king height. This is a Potter object first and a chess set second, and it's priced and built accordingly. That's not a knock if you know what you're buying. If Potter is your thing specifically, my best Harry Potter chess sets roundup breaks the licensed options down further.
What owners say: No rating count is published on this listing, so treat anything you read as anecdotal. With this class of licensed Potter set, the board art gets praised, the pieces get described as lighter than the photos suggest, and the dust bags get more mentions than you'd predict. The nobs and the board finish are where opinions split.
Good for: a family with a Potter fan old enough for 32 small pieces Skip it if: you're buying it as a playing set for adults

5. The Legend of Zelda Collector's Chess Set
- Features 32 custom-sculpted, collectible chess pieces from The Legend of Zelda universe
- Ages 8+, 2-player, 60+ Minutes Play Time
- Play as Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, and more in this epic battle of brains across Hyrule’s legendary kingdom
- Beautifully crafted game board with high-quality components
The Zelda set is the one I want to like more than the spec lets me. Thirty-two custom sculpts, and the character casting is smart: Link, Zelda, Impa, Epona, Darunia and Navi on the hero side, Ganondorf and Twinrova leading the villains. Ages 8+, two players, 60 plus minutes. Officially licensed Nintendo merchandise.
But the board is described only as "beautifully crafted" with "high-quality components." No size, no piece heights, no material. For a licensed collector product, that's a thin sheet, and it's the reason this sits below the GoT set despite my affection for the source material.
What owners say: Rating counts aren't published here, so I'm going on how USAOPOLY collector boards behave in general. The sculpts are the purchase. The board is a printed surface, and printed surfaces want to stay flat and dry, so don't stack books on it and don't leave it near a radiator.
Good for: Zelda fans buying the sculpts first Skip it if: you want board dimensions before you spend

6. Medieval Times Skull Busts Gothic Fantasy Skeleton Knights Chess Set …
- King: 3 1/8" Tall
- Shoulder Width 1 11/16"
- 2 ounce King
- Board 17 x 17 x 1/2 inches, Board 7 Pounds. Total Men Weight: 2 Pounds 13 oz.
This one publishes more numbers than anything else here, which is why I like it. King at 3 1/8 inches tall, shoulder width 1 11/16 inches, 2 ounce king. Board is 17 x 17 x 1/2 inches and weighs 7 pounds. Total men weight, 2 pounds 13 ounces. Solid resin, hand painted, fully felted bottoms, decorative box with foam storage.
The concession is the height. A 3 1/8 inch king is the shortest in this lineup, and skull-knight sculpts are wide rather than tall, so you get a lot of visual mass sitting low on the board. Square size isn't listed, which for a 17 inch board with wide-shouldered pieces is the one number I'd most like to have. If gothic is the direction you're heading, the best medieval chess sets list covers the straighter-laced alternatives.
What owners say: Nothing published to quote, so here's the honest read. Hand-painted resin is the category where buyers post close-up photos of paint lines, good and bad. The foam box is what keeps those lines intact in transit, and 2 pounds 13 ounces of resin rattling around inside a shipping carton is worth opening the day it lands, not a week later.
Good for: people who want heft and don't mind a squat king Skip it if: you want a tall king or a published square size

7. River Horse Studios Jim Henson's Labyrinth
- Package Weight: 2.0 pounds
- Number of players: 2
- Highly collectible chess set
- Jim Henson's licensed Chess set
River Horse's Labyrinth set is four lines of product data: highly collectible, Jim Henson licensed, two players, 2.0 pound package weight. That's the whole spec sheet. No piece count, no board size, no material, no age rating.
And that's the problem. Two pounds of package weight for a chess set is light, which tells you something about how much material is actualy in the box. I'd buy it as a Labyrinth object for a shelf, and I'd skip it as a chess set for anyone who plans to play more than once a year. The broader best unique chess sets list has options with more published detail if you want your weirdness documented.
What owners say: There's no rating count on this listing, so I won't pretend to have a consensus. With small-studio licensed collector sets, the pattern is consistent: the sculpts are the point, the pieces are lighter than the photos imply, and the box is thin. Buy the license, not the chess.
Good for: Labyrinth completists filling a gap on the shelf Skip it if: you need to know what's in the box before you buy
What actually matters when you buy a fantasy chess set
King height and base-to-square ratio. The old rule is a king base at 75 to 80 percent of a square. The Greek set here runs a 1 1/4 inch base on 1 5/8 inch squares, which is about 77 percent, and that's why it feels right under the hand. Skip any set where you can't work the ratio out.
Square size against the tournament standard. US Chess guidance is 2 to 2.5 inch squares with a king from 3.375 to 4.5 inches. Only one set in this seven publishes a square size, and it's under the floor. Know that going in and you won't be disappointed.
Weight, both the king and the board. A 2 ounce king and a 7 pound board is a different experience from a featherweight set that slides when you nudge it. Weights are the single best proxy for build quality in a listing, and four of these seven don't give you one.
Felt, and what the listing won't say. Two of the seven listings state felted bottoms. On painted resin, unfelted pieces grind the paint off each other inside the box and scuff the board in play. Cheap to add, rarely mentioned, worth asking about.
Storage and piece count. Thirty-two pieces is table stakes; foam cutouts and dust bags are the tell. If you collect dragon-themed sets the same rule applies, and my best dragon chess sets guide uses the same checklist.

Which one I'd buy
If you're going to play, buy the Greek Mythology set. A 3 3/8 inch king on 1 5/8 inch squares with felt under every piece is a real chess set, and the Olympus sculpts are good enough to leave out on the table. Just keep it away from tournament night.
If you're buying for a shelf, buy the Lord of the Rings set and accept that the listing won't tell you the king height. It's the best-looking 18.5 inches of Middle-earth you can put in a room, and that's the whole job.
And if a kid in your house is the reason you're shopping, the Harry Potter set with its two dust bags and 7+ age rating is the one that survives contact with a family.
Questions people ask me
Are fantasy chess sets good for actual play?
Some are, most aren't. The thing to check is the king base against the square size: a base around 75 to 80 percent of a square is playable, and anything much wider turns the board into a traffic jam. If the listing won't give you a king height or a square size, assume it was designed for a shelf.
What square size should a themed chess set have?
US Chess guidance puts tournament squares at 2 to 2.5 inches with a king between 3.375 and 4.5 inches tall. Almost no fantasy set hits that. The ones here that list a square size come in under 2 inches, which is fine for a kitchen table and cramped for a club night.
Do these sets come with storage for the pieces?
It varies, and it's the detail that separates the good ones. Some ship in a decorative box with foam cutouts, some include cloth dust bags, and some give you a cardboard tray and nothing else. Since these pieces are painted resin, the box they arrive in is worth keeping.
