Make Your Own Chess Set: Wood Blanks, Resin Molds, or a Printer (2026)

Three ways to build a playable set at home, and the measurements that decide whether it works.

You can make your own chess set at the kitchen table with 32 unfinished wooden pieces and three colors of paint, and have a playable set by Sunday night. The measurement that decides whether it plays well isn't the paint job. It's the square: US Chess guidance puts squares at 2 to 2.5 inches and kings at 3.375 to 4.5 inches, and a handmade set that misses those numbers is a shelf object, not a chess set.

I've watched this go wrong at club nights. Somebody brings in a set they spent a month on, and the pawns crowd the square, or the king's base is so wide it fouls the file next door. Fixing either one after the fact means starting over.

Pick a route: paint wood blanks, cast silicone, or print

Route What you start with Skill floor The usual failure
Paint and finish wood 32 carved blanks, 2 to 3.4 in tall Low Paint soaks in, finish stays tacky
Cast in silicone molds A kit with 16 piece cavities plus a board mold Medium Air bubbles, short pours, long cures
3D print Files and a printer Medium to high 32 pieces is a lot of print hours

The wood route is the one I'd hand a first-timer. The AEVVV blank set runs from a 2 inch pawn up to a 3.4 inch king, arrives already shaped, and leaves you with color and finish as the only variables. Resin casts photograph better, I'll give them that, but resin also means ventilation, gloves, and a lot of waiting between pours.

The mold kits do most of the setup work already. LET'S RESIN packs a board mold, a checker mold, king, queen, rook, knight and 8 pawn molds, 6 mica powders and a storage bag into one box, and claims a full 32-piece run in two passes. If you'd rather skip the mess, look at 3D printed chess pieces and print on demand instead.

Sizes to lock in before you make anything

Write these numbers on a sticky note and keep it on the bench. Get them right and everything downstream is easy.

Specification Target The math
King height 3.375 to 4.5 in The AEVVV blank king at 3.4 in sits near the low end
King base diameter 75 to 80 percent of a square A 1.5 in base wants squares of roughly 1.9 to 2 in
Square size 2 to 2.5 in 8 squares across the board
Playing surface 16 to 20 in 8 x 2 in is 16; 8 x 2.5 in is 20
Piece count 32 total 16 light, 16 dark, 8 pawns a side

Base diameter is the spec nobody publishes. Of the three sets in this guide, the AEVVV listing gives heights only, so if you're painting blanks, measure the base with calipers when they land and pick your square size from that. A 1.6 inch base on a 2 inch square is workable. On a 1.5 inch square it's a bar fight. When you're ready to build the board around those numbers, the how to make a chess board walkthrough covers the grid and the frame.

Painting and finishing 32 wooden blanks

Here's what the AEVVV listing actually spells out, piece by piece.

Piece Height listed Count in the set
King 3.4 in 1
Queen 3 in 1
Bishop 2.4 in 2
Knight 2.2 in 2
Rook 2.2 in 2
Pawn 2 in 8

That's 16 per side, 32 total. The listing says the pieces are hand carved from "highest-grade wood," but the species isn't named, and neither is the piece weight or the base diameter. Worth asking before you buy, because a light poplar pawn and a dense maple pawn feel completely diffrent in the hand.

Two thin coats of sanding sealer first, then your color, then a satin or matte clear coat. Skip gloss. Gloss shows every fingerprint and every brush mark, and you'll be handling these pieces for years. Keep a light tray and a dark tray so you don't mix them up mid-project. If the finished pieces feel hollow and clicky, a flat 1 inch washer glued under the base adds enough heft to stop the board from sounding like plastic. There are more finishing tricks in the DIY chess pieces guide.

Casting resin: read the parts list twice

The two kits here don't list the same cavities, and that matters when you're pouring.

Kit Piece molds the listing names Extras
LET'S RESIN (B09X9927Q3) King, queen, rook, knight, 8 pawn molds Board mold, checker mold, 6 mica powders, storage bag
HeyClear (B0H15C4FNL) 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rook, 2 bishop, 2 knight, 8 pawn 6 color pigments, gold flakes, storage bag

Read that first row again. The LET'S RESIN feature text never names a bishop mold, even though the title says 16 piece molds and the description promises a full 32-piece set in two passes. My count of the listed contents comes to 21 items against 25 in the title. That may be loose copywriting rather than a missing mold, but I'd confirm before ordering, because no bishop mold means a very strange chess set.

HeyClear is more explicit: 16 cavities including two bishops, plus pigments and gold flakes, and the listing says the molds work with epoxy resin, UV resin and casting plaster. Cast one pawn first, let it cure, and check it against a 2 inch square before you commit an entire batch. Cured resin is light and slightly slippery, so a resin set that looks like jewelry can still skate across the board.

Test the fit in one evening

You don't need a finished board to find out whether your pieces work. Cut one square out of cardboard at 2.25 inches, stand your tallest piece on it, and eyeball the margin. If the king's base covers more than 80 percent of that square, go to 2.5 and rebuild the template. A regulation board is 64 squares, 32 light and 32 dark, and you want visible wood between every pair of pieces at rest.

For a fast mock board to test the whole set, print one: the printable chess board gives you a full grid in minutes. Once the sizes are settled and you want to build the real thing, the DIY chess board plans cover the frame and the inlay work.

Questions people ask me

How much does it cost to make your own chess set?

The wood blank route is usually the cheapest to start because you buy one set of 32 shaped pieces and some paint. Resin casting needs molds, resin, pigments and a well-ventilated space. 3D printing trades money for hours, since 32 pieces is a long queue on a small printer.

Can you make a chess set without a lathe?

Yes. You only need a lathe if you want to turn your own pieces from square stock. Most home builds start with pre-carved wooden blanks, a silicone mold kit, or a set of printable files.

What size should the squares be on a homemade chess board?

US Chess guidance puts squares at 2 to 2.5 inches and kings at 3.375 to 4.5 inches, with the king base about 75 to 80 percent of a square. Work backward from your king's base diameter and the rest falls into place.
